To understand the differences between public service and commercial institutions
Public Service Broadcasting:
Public Service Broadcasting:
- PSB means that programmes are made for the public . There are no advertisement.
- PSB generally transmit programming that aims to improve society by informing viewers.
- PSB broadcasters also strive to entertain their viewers.
- The BBC is a good example of a Public Service Broadcaster.
- Remit- The responsibility of a programme.
- BBC Remit- To enrich Peoples lives with programs and services that inform and educate and entertain.
- To reflect the UK , its culture are values to the world.
Funding:
- 75% of the BBC funding comes from the licensing (Currently costs £147 for a colour and £49.50 for a black and white Tv Licence .
- The remaining 25% goes to commercial activities.
Structure of the BBC:
- The BBC is a Cross- media organisations- one of the largest in Europe.
- The means it is Vertically and Horizontal integrated
- Vertical integration= In which a media company has the ability to control the production, distribution and exchange pf a product.( They don't use any company only there own, they have the ability to control different processes of a media product )
- Horizontal interrogational= In which a media company has a number of subsidiary companies that are used to support the marketing of its products .
BBC Case Study :Doctor who
Doctor who uses Horizontal integration on the BBC website
Synergy :
Companies that are both vertically and horizontally intergtrated are able to create Synergy across their output.
This means they are able to promote the program .
So doctor who can be advertised across a range of different media via horizontal integration.
Online and social media services = Through the BBC websites and twitter feed.
Print media and print advertising = Through the radio times magazines publications.
Distributions
Tv Channels = The show can be advertised across different channels.
Merchandise = A range of doctor who merchandise.
