Audience needs

What’s meant by the term ‘audience needs’?

What's meant by the term 'audience needs'
  • Audience needs may be wants, deficits, conditions, or other gaps between skills/knowledge audiences already have and those they want.
Why do we consume certain types of media?
  • We consume different types of media for different purposes for example for entertainment. We watch TV shows such as the X Factor for enjoyment where as we watch other programmes such as the News for a knowledge purpose to get information about what is going on in the world. All the different programmes represent different genres and they all have a different meaning for why we consume them. Finally we watch things to keep up to date and in trend with each other for example Love Island which was a high trend in 2018 which lots of people watched for entertainment.
Are there times you might consume certain types of media, while at other times discount them?
  • There are times that you may consume a film in the cinema and enjoy and get involved with the film as there are all different people there who are interested in the same film you are interested in but then discounted it when you watched it again on your own at home. This is because the scenery and atmosphere is completely different.
How can you be an active or passive audience member?
  • Active - An active role model of consumption suggests that text have am effected on the audience.
  • Passive - A passive model instead suggests that audiences interact with the text to create meaning.

More details of Active Audiences
  • The active audience theory argues that media audiences do not just receive information passively but actively involved. It is often happened when they are making sense of the message within their personal and social contexts.
  • Decoding of a media message may therefore influence by such things as family background, beliefs, values, culture, interests, education and experiences.
The Uses and Gratifications Theory
  • The Uses and Gratifications Theory assumes audiences actively seek out media to satisfy individual needs.
